Keeping Your Washing Machine and Atlanta Home Safe From Water Damage

water damage atlanta gaWe know that water damage can come from a number of sources in our Atlanta homes, but we are going to focus on just one of those right now– the washing machine. An average washing machine uses between 20 and 80 gallons of water each load, so when something goes wrong the water damage can be catastrophic. So, what can you do to help keep your washing machine in tip-top shape and from causing water damage

Water Damage In Atlanta, GA

  1. One of the best ways to diagnose a leak and add instant security for your washing machine if there is a leak is to use a washer tray under your washing machine. A washer tray catches water that leaks and drips so they do not soak into your floors and cause damage. If you suspect your washer is leaking, you can add a tray and check it after every load to see if water is collecting there. Functioning to diagnose and defend against water damage, a washer tray is an inexpensive but also invaluable tool that is often underutilized in laundry rooms.
  2.  Another preventative step you can take is to install a single lever water shutoff valve to your laundry water supply. Most washing machine water hookups are installed with a dual lever shut off so one for the hot water supply and one for the cold water supply. When it comes to water flowing and flooding into your laundry room, it takes twice as long to turn shut off the water supply when you have two valves, and unless you know exactly which water supply is causing the leak, that could cost you valuable time in stopping water damage. With a single lever shut off valve, you are able to cut both the hot and cold water supply at the same time. Not only is this very advantageous if water is leaking from your washing machine, but it also makes turning off the water supply when the washer is not in use even more convenient. This is a good practice because it will ensure water is not just sitting in the hoses where it is more prone to leaking out when the machine is not being used – just one more precaution you can take to reduce the risk of water damage.
  3. Be sure to follow manufacturer’s guidelines for proper usage, detergent, and load capacity. Using the wrong type of detergent, or using too much detergent, can cause malfunction and build up inside the machine which can lead to leaking water. Over-filling the tub can cause the washing machine to become off-balance, and can cause water to leak out, resulting in water damage. It is also good practice to follow cleaning and maintenance schedules as outlined in the owner’s manual to expand the life of your machine and keep it functioning efficiently and correctly.
  4. Last, but not least, be sure to inspect your water supply hoses regularly to ensure there are no kinks, holes, and that the connections are tight and secure. Allow enough space between your washing machine and the wall so that your hose is not squashed or pinched, which will impeded the flow of water and greatly increase the risk of leaks and water damage.
